Registration of the Lur mark
The idea of setting up a country of origin mark for Danish butter emerged in 1888 as it became increasingly apparent that exporters were illegally passing off foreign butter as Danish butter. This, and the fact that the consistency and quality of butter from Danish co-operative dairies was improving greatly, gave rise to a demand for a joint national quality brand.

In 1900 a number of dairies formed the Danish Dairies' Butter Mark Association as an initial step towards developing a joint brand. On 23 October 1901 the association registered its mark: the intertwined lurs and the words "Danish Butter" and "Lur Brand"; the birth certificate of the Lur mark had been issued.
